Beyond the Heather
Some encounters change how you see the world. A few years ago, I traveled to Scotland and met a Highland cow face to face. She stood calm and unbothered, her calf close by, both of them soft under all that wild, tangled hair. I reached out and touched her coat. Rough on the outside, warm and gentle underneath. I never forgot her.
Beyond the Heather began as a way to hold onto that moment. The cow stands front and center, her shaggy coat built up in thick layers of burnt orange, rust, gold, and deep umber, with strokes of red catching the light across her shoulders. Her horns curve wide and pale against a soft blue sky, and her eyes hold a quiet, steady patience.
Behind her, the fields stretch out in muted greens touched with lavender and dusty purple, hints of heather rolling toward distant hills. The paint sits heavy on the canvas, built up with a palette knife so the surface has real texture, ridges and edges you can see and almost feel.
Beyond the Heather is about the tenderness we find in unexpected places. A creature built rugged and wild, standing gentle in an open field. A reminder that softness and strength live in the same body, and connection can find you anywhere, even a hillside in Scotland with an animal you just met.
